Women's PPE Challenges

April 2017

Historically, PPE has been designed with a man’s body shape and size in mind and ‘the one size fits all’ principle made it simple for manufacturers. Today 11% of the construction industry workers are women and this raises the concern about their protective equipment. The current situation makes it hard for women to find PPE that fits correctly because of previous attitudes. There is a need for women’s PPE within the construction industry and it is taking time to change the old tradition of ‘one size fits all’.

Just 29% of respondents reported that the PPE they wear is designed for women. (Prospect, 2016) This lack of women’s clothing can also increase risk of injury and harm when working on site.

Recent reports such as the ‘One Size Does Not Fit All Survey’ published by Prospect have increased the understanding of challenges that women face regarding PPE. Many organisation’s within the industry have taken up the challenge to work together to innovate and solve issues such as this.

At OnSite Support Ltd, we are proud to work with women in the construction industry to define their needs and provide them PPE that is styled to the correct shape and size. We acknowledge that women make up a considerable part of the UK construction workforce, and that is why we are dedicated to solving PPE solutions for them.
