The construction workforce was 15.8 per cent female in April to June 2023, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). As a business, OnSite is ahead of the industry in which it supplies PPE, consumables, site welfare and equipment, in terms of gender diversity, with female employees accounting for 37% of its workforce, and plans to increase this by 10% in the next 10 years.

OnSite Support puts people at the heart of everything it does, delivering safety, welfare and site equipment for all involved in the construction trade. As part of this effort, the company is ensuring that a particular focus is placed on supporting women through its promotion of female professional development and gender-specific product ranges.

Unlike traditional unisex-style PPE garments, the company’s gender-specific products provide a better fit and are therefore more effective. The lack of gender-specific PPE not only affects women’s safety but also their work efficiency and overall wellbeing. Having PPE designed specifically for women is crucial from a health and safety standpoint. It goes beyond just size; it involves ensuring proper fit, form, and function for individuals performing various roles. Simply sizing down doesn’t often provide a solution. Incorrectly sized PPE can lead to risks such as snagging, entrapment, restricted movement, discomfort, and reduced visibility. To address these issues, it is essential for employers to prioritize gender-specific PPE to safeguard the health and safety of all workers equally.

“PPE that fits is a foundational block beneath completing site work, just as a working computer is foundational to completing office work.  But it does more than just allow the job to be done; badly fitting PPE could cost a person their life before it saves it. We need to reframe how we see PPE, from last layer of defence to first layer of the safety system to come into contact with our bodies.” – Katherine Evans, Industry Thought Leader & Founder of Bold As Brass

Moving forward, OnSite is also committed to continuing to provide opportunities for women and celebrating their success stories. In addition, while the achievements of its people are championed regularly internally – the company will ensure that its female employees continue to be recognised for their achievements.

“Women In Construction Week gives us an opportunity to reflect on our ongoing support of women in our business and the wider construction industry. As a company, we are very proud to outperform the industry average, in which we offer our products and services to, but there is always more we can do. Now, with this new package of support measures, for women joining and forging a career path within our own business, alongside our recommitment to our women’s range – we’re doing exactly that.” – Warren Lynes, Managing Director at OnSite Support
